Spring Event: Storage During Easter
March 31, 2026A variety of items are often stored in a unit which require storage practices. This includes anything from furniture to clothes, which have specific needs to keep them protected and preserved during any storage duration. We have included a few key practices to help you keep all items perfect for when needed.
1 Big Self Storage features a full-range of units that allow both short and long-term storage. From 12 to 200 square feet, our storage units can provide solutions for seasonal storage and even for moving home. Whether you are planning to store your hobbies or keep your sofa until its needed, we match you to the best size for your requirements.
Storage Practices: Best choices for selected items
Our storage practices cover a range of items that can be affected by storage if not implemented correctly. This includes protective materials and even positioning, which many clients can sometimes neglect when in a rush. To help our clients store without unexpected issues after Spring, we have listed some of the key practices you should keep in mind when utilising your storage solution.
Sofa Needs Space
Sofas often take up considerable storage space, leading many to try to stand them up so they can fit more in. However, this often causes long-term damage if the cushions are pressed against the floor. It is important to position any sofa as intended by its design so it can be taken out in its prime when desired.
Make sure you find the best unit space that allows you to place a sofa correctly. This is often a 75 or 100 SQFT at minimum, so that the sofa can stand properly. Always consult our team if you need assistance with choosing the best solution for your furniture that meets storage practices.
Keep Clothes Contained
Clothes are often stored as a result of seasonal transitions. This includes storing winter jumpers, coats, and other miscellaneous items features during the past season. Keeping these items in a sealed box/cover or even vacuum-packed is the best way to ensure they retain their quality. Leaving them out in the open can cause deterioration, so make sure to store them properly and use the appropriate method to protect them.
Stacking Pressure Mistakes
Stacking items is a common way to use as much of the space as possible, especially with our 9ft-high walls in all storage units. However, stacking without thinking of the materials or weight used can cause issues. Good examples of this are stacking heavy boxes on top of cushions or even on the sofa. Placing long-term pressure on a cushion will cause it to lose its resilience. Make sure you stack light items on top of heavy items, especially if the pressure of the weight will cause items to degrade.
Don't Let Dust Set In
Our Self-Storage units are clean, dry, and secure but dust can still settle overtime. Using covers over items is common when storing anything longer than a month. Fortuntely, we sell a range of covers for sofas, mattresses, and more. Make sure to speak to reception regarding any of the items you plan to store long term and get your storage protection at the desk.
